What if there is no money?

I am sure you have all seen, through the emails on campus, that Westminster is now REQUIRING that all students own their own laptop.  I understand this is higher education, and that there are financial aide options available for those who do not have a laptop, and cannot afford one, but how does this work in elementary education? We all know funding for education is very limited, and that many teachers use their own money to enhance their classroom materials. How are we supposed to implement the use of technology in our classroom if there is no funding to buy the technology in the first place?

  1. Teach them about it if there is no way for them to practice it in the school. That is they best you could do if the resources were not there.

  2. This is difficult, but there are a few resources for teachers. Look on www.grants4teachers.com to find money for classroom supplies.

  3. If you can't afford laptops for your kids, you're not going to make a very good teacher.

  4. You can bring in your own laptop as an example or encourage your students to use the library as a resource.

  5. Shared school computers would allow you to use technology without spending the money for a computer for every student.

  6. I agree with J.Rock. If you are teaching in a school that doesn't have any access to computers or technology you should probably get back in the time machine and leave 1956 and return to your classroom in 2011. If that still doesn't help, try grants, and then try sending anonymous tips to various news outlets pointing out something vary prejudiced about why your school doesn't have computers. It worked for me when I was in high school and we got our district to build a whole new school.

  7. Letters to the editor! Letters to the editor! More letters to the editor! Letter writing in our society is not really a valued skill anymore. However, sending a few or few hundred letters could change the technological future of many students. I agree with Kristen - make it a huge deal. What if there is no money? Make it obvious.
